That’s right I own a Slimer figurine, what can I say, I grew up in the 80s.

Slimer wasn’t the only thing 80s about this shoot. I used joss sticks to create the plasma effect and the smell took me right back to my teen years and ‘alternative’ shops … they also made me feel sick but I don’t mind suffering for my art.

Setup

I used two flashguns, one with a snoot and one with a grid. The flash to the left also has a green filter attached. The figurine is spring mounted so bobs about; I used rear curtain flash to capture this motion and also sprayed it with water for some extra shine/slime. I’m pleased how much of the overall effect was done without Photoshop.

Slimer Video

I didn’t plan on making a short video but when I was flicking through the 150 or so shots the animation effect made me laugh. Add some 80s tunes and you have a dancing Slimer. I actually think Slimer should get its own origin story, Ghostbusters but from the misunderstood ghosts perspective.

You’ll notice on the video Slimer is missing a few fingers. I added these to the finished stills but wasn’t about to do the same to all the frames I used in the video! I also removed the stand in the stills.

Creating Slimer video

Interestingly I found this great Making Slimer video, from the 2016 movie, after I’d finished mine. I think my joss sticks did a pretty good job!

Remember, if there’s something strange, in your neighbourhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!
